Exodus 28,29,39 – The Priesthood
Walking Through Exodus
Devotions - Week 17
Key passages: Exodus 28,29,39
As we continue to walk through the book of Exodus together, Moses has ascended Mount Sinai for forty days meeting with God. God reveals to him his plan for priests who were set apart to go in and out of the tabernacle representing a sinful people to a holy God, bringing the blood of sacrificed animals to cover the people’s sin, and bringing the presence of God to the people.
We saw in the book of Hebrews in the New Testament that this was a copy of what was in heaven, a shadow of Jesus the high priest who did not need to sacrifice for his own sin but provided a once for all sacrifice for people who would come in to God’s holy presence through him.
We remember that what we do comes from who we are, purpose comes from identity. Peter declares in 1 Peter 2:9 ‘… you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light’

Chosen (please read Isaiah 61:6 and Revelation 1:6) – Priests were chosen only from descendants of Aaron. What difference does it make to you that God has chosen you to be kingly priests?
[for leaders: something God has planned to do by sending Jesus not just to save you from your wrongdoing but also to serve a holy God and to represent him to the people around you]
Consecrated (please read 2 Corinthians 5:21; Zechariah 3:3-5) – the Priests were set apart as holy to the Lord, sprinkled with blood from sacrificed animals and anointed with oil. How does a holy God make it possible for us know his presence?
[for leaders: We are clothed with Jesus’ righteousness in the exchange that happened on the cross when he carried our wrongdoing]
Clothed (Please read Romans 13:14) – the Priests wore holy garments (Exodus 28:4) for glory and beauty (Exodus 28:40). They bore the names of the tribes of Israel into the tabernacle. In what ways are we clothed as kingly priests? See Psalm 132:9; Revelation 19:8; Revelation 3:4; Colossians 3:4; Ephesians 6:11-17
[for leaders: we are justified for all eternity by the blood of Jesus but we are sanctified, being made holy, by Jesus through his Holy Spirit as we clothe ourselves in pure acts, kindness, faith etc)]
Carry – spend some time praying together about the authority you have as kingly priests and praying for each other.
Here are some examples:

Carry – spend some time praying together about the authority you have as kingly priests and praying for each other.
Here are some examples:
- intercession as we carry people on our hearts into God’s presence as we pray.
- carry the gospel, sharing the good news about Jesus, to the people we meet.
- carry the presence of Jesus, his compassion, his healing, the love of the Father, the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit into our homes and places of learning, travel, work, shopping, entertainment etc.
- carry blessing and favour wherever we are, not necessarily saying anything, bringing the culture of the Kingdom.
- declare promises and prophetic words over our families, households, neighbourhoods, communities, cities and nations.
