A New Start with God
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
(Genesis 1:1-2)
It isn’t very often that we have a chance to start our lives all over again. But that’s precisely the opportunity that God has given us in 2020. Just about everything in our lives has been thrown up in the air – our jobs, our schools, our finances, our calendars, our friendships, our church and our nation
So well done for taking the time to begin these Everyday Devotions today. You are doing so at a vital time, when the Lord is inviting us to take a good look at our lives and to decide how we want our lives to start over again.
The first four words of the Bible are “In the beginning God”. That ought to encourage us. The post-Covid world is not something that we need to invent and then ask God to bless. The Lord is already actively at work all around us. He invites us to put him first in our plans too, and to view this season as an opportunity to start again with him.
1) What has this year left “formless and empty” in your own life? What changes might the Lord be wanting to bring about in your life?
2) If the Holy Spirit is “hovering over the waters” of your life to do God’s work in you today, then what would you most like him to do in you and through you?
3) In what ways are you trying to recreate your life in your own strength? What would it mean for you to embrace the fact that all new creation originates with God’s almighty power?

Father God, thank you that you always go ahead of me. In the beginning, it is always you, never me. I surrender all that is formless and empty in my life to you today. Holy Spirit who hovers over my life, do God’s work in me today. Amen.
